Psychiatric Help for Tourists in Greece: Online Appointments and Prescriptions With Your Passport
Ran out of medication or struggling on holiday in Greece? How online or in-person psychiatric appointments and e-prescriptions work for visitors, in English.

Short answer
If you are visiting Greece and you ran out of your regular medicine, or you are struggling with anxiety, panic or sleep on holiday, you can see an English-speaking psychiatrist without an AMKA (the Greek social security number). Appointments are online by video call from anywhere in Greece, or in person in Trikala, and cost 130 euro. If the doctor decides a prescription is appropriate after the consultation, it is issued electronically with your passport and email. You give the code from the email to the pharmacist and pay the full price of the medicine. If you are in immediate danger, call 112 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department. A routine appointment is not an emergency service.
What I see most often
The most common thing I see in visitors is how hard it is to find a psychiatrist at the moment you need one, especially one who trained in an English-speaking country and can talk with you in English. Being in an unfamiliar healthcare system makes people feel vulnerable and anxious, and what they want most is someone to guide them: how a doctor here can help, and what the steps are, all the way to getting a prescription. That is what this page sets out to explain. — Dr. Georgios Mylonas
When this can help
You ran out of a medicine you take regularly, or lost it, and you cannot return home soon.
You are very anxious, have had a panic attack, or cannot sleep, and it is spoiling your trip or making you afraid to continue it.
You are travelling or living in Greece for months, for example as a remote worker, and need continuity of treatment.
In each of these situations, the doctor first listens and assesses. Nothing is prescribed automatically.
What is possible, and what is not
Possible
A consultation in English by video call, from your hotel, a rented flat or an island, or in person in Trikala.
An electronic prescription, if the doctor judges it appropriate. You need only your passport and an email address, whether or not you have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The Greek procedure for electronic prescriptions without an AMKA is described by the government for non-EU and EU citizens staying in Greece temporarily or on holiday [1].
Not possible
Emergencies. A scheduled appointment is not an emergency service. In an emergency call 112 and ask for a doctor or an ambulance, or go to the nearest hospital emergency department [2].
A prescription without a consultation. The doctor always decides after assessing you.
Reimbursement of the prescription by the Greek national health fund (EOPYY). You pay the full price at the pharmacy.
How it works, step by step
Book a time in the calendar on the home page, or call +30 24310 32281. Tell the practice you are a visitor and in which country you live.
Join the video call or come to Trikala. An appointment costs 130 euro.
Show your passport during the consultation. The doctor records it in the national e-prescription system [1].
If a prescription is appropriate, it is sent to your email. Take the email (code) and your passport to any pharmacy in Greece.
Pay the full price of the medicine at the pharmacy. The price depends on the medicine and is not known before the consultation.
What to have with you
Your valid passport, and an email address you can open.
The name of your medicine as written on the box, or a photo of the box or of an earlier prescription. A copy of your prescription helps doctors find the same or a similar medicine [2].
Any earlier reports.
Medicines that are legal in your country may be subject to different rules in Greece. Check before travelling [2].
Frequently asked questions
Can you see me today?
Sessions are by appointment. If there is availability, they can take place the same day. Choose the earliest time in the calendar or call the practice.
Do I need a Greek AMKA or a referral?
No. For a prescription you need your passport and an email address.
What if I only need my usual medicine?
Say so when you book and bring the name of the medicine. The doctor still assesses your situation before prescribing, and decides whether a prescription is appropriate. The same medicine may not be sold in Greece under the same name.
Does this include controlled medicines?
Medicines that need a special controlled-substances prescription are also issued electronically in this way. The doctor decides case by case, and nothing is promised in advance.
I have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Is the procedure different?
No. At this practice the procedure is the same, with or without an EHIC. You need your passport.
Does the doctor speak English?
Yes. Appointments are in English or Greek.
